Inherited from Aramaic [Term?] and of the noun pattern 1i23ālā; compare Classical Syriac ܥܲܪܒܵܠܵܐ. Also loaned into Old Armenian խարբալեմ (xarbalem) and Arabic غِرْبَال (ḡirbāl); the Arabic vowels may represent a borrowing from an unattested variant of this word similar in NENA.
