Etymology

Uncertain. Sometimes said to be from ܐܘܿܪ (ōr, “Ur”) +‎ ܡܲܝܵܐ (mayyā, “water”) in reference to the lake Urmia nearby, but considering the presence of /ʒ/ in the formed adjective ܐܘܼܪܡܝܼܙ̰ܢܵܝܵܐ (urmīžnāyā), more likely from the name of Ahura Mazda. If so, a Doublet of ܗܘܿܪܡܝܼܙܕ (hōrmīzd).
