ܐܕܘܠܐ

Classical Syriac

Etymology

Unknown.

Löw’s theory, followed by Brockelmann, that it is rather *ܐܕܘܠܐ (ʔarwālā) and from ܢܒܪܐ (nḇārā, palm-fibre) has no basis other than the one-word gloss of the term by native lexicographers as لِيف (līf, fibres), which indeed the Spanish broom was harvested for, but we don't know analogies in other languages that the phytonym stood for fibres in genere; the plant's name in Arabic antiquity is hardly known and the botanical layman writing a dictionary is at loss to define the plant.
