Compound of Classical Persian یوم (yawm) + تعطیل (ta'tīl), the first element from Arabic يَوْم (yawm, day), the second from Arabic verbal noun تَعْطِيل (taʕṭīl, suspension, break, hindrance), from verb عَطَّلَ (ʕaṭṭala, to suspend, to inactivate).
