Etymology

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit *𑀖𑀭𑀸𑀬𑀬𑀡 (*gharāyayaṇa) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) from Sanskrit *घरायतन (*gharāyatana), from *घर (*ghara) + आयतन (āyátana), in which *घर (*ghara) is a reborrowed Prakrit form of गृह (gṛhá) (or गृध (gṛdha), which is from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gʰr̥dʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰr̥dʰós, from *gʰerdʰ- (to enclose). Cognate with Punjabi ਘਰਾਨਾ (gharānā) / گھرانہ (ghrānh), Sindhi گھراڻو (ghrāṇo) / घराणो, Marathi घराणे (gharāṇe), Nepali घरान् (gharān).
