Etymology 1

    Inherited from Middle Persian kʾpwl (/⁠kābul⁠/). The city (and subsequently the province) was named after the nearby river. The name of the river predates the advent of Islam, with the term's meaning and origin being ultimately unknown.[1][2]

    The earliest attested usages in reference to the city include Ancient Greek Κάβουρα (Káboura) or Κάρουρα (Károura) and later Middle Chinese 高附 (kaw bjuH) (from which, Mandarin 高附 (Gāofù)).[3]

    The name of the river is attested even earlier, as Sanskrit कुभा (kubhā) and Ancient Greek Κοφεν (Kophen), Κοφεσ (Kophes), and Κοα (Koa).[1][4]
