A corruption of Classical Persian وَقْت (waqt), from Arabic وَقْت (waqt). First attested in c. 17th century as Old Punjabi ਵਖਤੁ (vakhatu).[1] Doublet of وَقَت (vaqat, “time”). For /q/ to /kʰ/, compare Gujarati વખત (vakhat).
