Etymology

  • From هور (hur, “sun”) +‎ لو (lû, “west”), meaning "sunset, west". The original form was هورلوی (hurlûy, “sunset”), which evolved into modern هەولێر (hewlêr).
  • From 𒌨𒉈𒈝𒆠 (Urbilum, Urbelum or Urbillum) from Sumerian (Ur) meaning city and (bela) meaning high as the city is located in the upper area, then its meaning corrupted via Akkadian 𒀴𒁀𒉌𒈝 (Arbā'ilu, “four gods”), via Aramaic ܐܪܒܝܠ (Arbel), Ancient Greek Ἄρβηλα (Árbēla), Middle Persian [script needed] (Arbēl). The name entered Kurdish through various historical forms, eventually becoming هەولێر (hewlêr).
  • From a claimed form meaning "city of Aryans" (*ārī-pād), though this etymology is considered legendary and lacks solid historical evidence.
