Etymology

Probably from a Western Aramaic word cognate to Classical Syriac ܢܬܰܫ (ntaš, “to tear, to pluck out, to extract, to bite, to reduce”). Curiously, Werner Arnold's extensive 2019 dictionary of Western Neo-Aramaic[1] makes no record of the survival of such a term in the Western Neo-Aramaic of Maaloula, Bakh'a, or Jubb'adin, possibly setting an early date for its proposed borrowing into Arabic.
