From earlier لَاقَى (lāʔa), from Arabic لَاقَى (lāqā, “to encounter, to meet”), the initial long vowel first contracting due to being unstressed in conjugations like لاقيت (lāʔēt, “I found”) > لقيت (laʔēt).
