Etymology

From earlier كدوس (gedüs), from Ancient Greek Κᾰ́δους (Kắdous), accusative form of Κᾰ́δοι (Kắdoi), the ancient name of the town. The original settlement was destroyed in 1970 by an earthquake and later called Eskigediz. The river takes its name from the town and was known as Ἕρμος (Hérmos) in antiquity.
