Borrowed from English cod, as the range of the fish does not overlap with typical Arabic-speaking areas; compare Hebrew קוד (kod, “cod”). Compare also its other names مُورَة (mūra, “cod”) borrowed from French morue, and غادُس (ḡādus, “cod”) borrowed from Latin gadus (“generic term for fish; cod”). But the word قُدّ as a type of fish appears in two early Arabic-Arabic dictionaries, the Qamus of al-Fīrūzābādī (1329–1414) and the 'Ubaab of al-Saghānī (1181-1252), suggesting that a borrowing from English is most improbable. Perhaps from Greek γάδος?
