Etymology

    Inherited from Arabic فِنْجَان (finjān), borrowed from Classical Persian پِنْگَان (pingān), possibly borrowed from Classical Syriac ܦܝܢܟܐ (pīnəḵā), from Aramaic פִּינְכָא (pīnəkā), borrowed from Ancient Greek πίναξ (pínax).

    1. a demitasse; a small cup used mainly to serve and drink coffees drank in short amounts such as Turkish coffee or Espresso shots.

    Usage notes

    A small teacup (usually glassy) is called استكان (istikān). A large tea/coffee cup is كوب (kūb).
