عاود • (ʕāwad)

   Synonyms: تاني (tāni), عاود تاني (ʕāwad tāni), عاوتاني (ʕāwtāni)

   ضربني عاود. ― ḍrabni ʕāwad. ― He hit me again.

From the verb عَاوَد (ʕāwad, “to do again, to go back and do”), in turn from Arabic عَاوَدَ (ʕāwada), recorded in areas like the Galilee and Bishmizzine as a fully conjugated auxiliary. Meanwhile, other varieties froze this auxiliary into an invariable particle by crystallizing it in the third-person masculine past form as عَاوَد (ʕāwad, invariable), the same development seen in قال (ʔāl, “apparently”), قام (ʔām, “up and”), and ما عاد (ma ʕād, “no longer”).

The subsequent shift from عاوَد (ʕāwad, invariable) to عاوِد (ʕāwid) may be related to the lack of stress on the final syllable and could mirror the shift of the perfective feminine verb ending from ـَت (-at) to ـِت (-it). It may also have been supported by a broader pattern of aC > iC in final syllables found throughout the region, seen in (today markedly rural) forms like أَسوِد (ʔaswid, “black”).

Akin to Moroccan Arabic عاوَد (ʕāwad, “again”) and presumably also originally meant "again" before developing into its current sense.

     Francis had pruned the vines before he went up to the šīr [the rocky face of the mountain], and there was a single vine near his head that his turban draped itself over. Tansa Nehme came by and walked past him, stepped on the vine, knocked the turban off, and cried: Mom—Farfūra! Look, Francis has risen! and then Romanos Chidiac came to tell him off, saying: You nutcase! A dead man risen? Look at you, coming to scare us at this hour...
