A phono-semantic matching of Latin ulex, augmented from جَالَ (jāla, to go around), from the idea of the plant carpeting the ground, and easily fastening itself around those who tread on it, and also the idea of a containing “sack” in the other etymology under the present spelling, and probably also a dissimilation in the fashion of يَرْبُوز (yarbūz)جَرْبُوز (jarbūz), يَرْبُوع (yarbūʕ)جَرْبُوع (jarbūʕ).
