South Levantine Arabic
Etymology
From Arabic *اِسْتَأَنَّى (*istaʔannā), an alternative pan-dialectal form of تَأَنَّى (taʔannā) related to the pattern of استْلَقَّى (istlaʔʔa, “to catch, receive”), اسْتْنَاوَل (istnāwal, “to receive, take over”), and a dwindling set of other words. Most words of this set have been or are being regularized to form V, such as تْلَقَّى (itlaʔʔa) and تْنَاوَل (itnāwal), but اِسْتَنَّى (istanna) has resisted this fate because the loss of the original hamza has made the verb's relationship to form V too opaque to recover.
