Etymology

From Proto-West Semitic *ḳatal- and therefore cognate with Arabic قَتَلَ (qatala) and Aramaic קְטַל (qəṭal). In both Hebrew and Aramaic the second letter of the root became emphatic due to the influence of the preceding /q/.
