Coined by Hebrew linguist, grammarian, journalist, lexicographer, newspaper editor and Zionist activist Eliezer Ben-Yehuda from Mishnaic גִּהֵץ / גיהץ (gihéts) and הִגְהִיץ (highíts, “to iron, polish”).
