Etymology

חַמַאס (Hamas) +‎ ־סְטָן (land of). Coined by opponents of the 2004 disengagement plan, due to Hamas' rise in the politics of the Palestinian Authority. Popularised in June 2007 after Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip, causing the Gaza Strip to be perceived to be a Hamas state, and then reported in foreign media.
