A Mishnaic borrowing from Ancient Greek ζεῦγος (zeûgos, pair), in turn derived from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (to join). Analogous Semitic borrowings of the same term include Arabic زَوْج (zawj, spouse), زَوَّجَ (zawwaja, to join) and Aramaic זוֹגָא (zōḡā, pair, spouse), זַוֵּג (zawwēḡ, to join naturally or as in the act of a performed match-making).
