Possibly from הָלָא (halá', “to push away”) + ־ָה (-a, “to, toward, in the direction of, -ward”); compare לְהַלָּן (l'halan) with the same meaning. Compare Jewish Babylonian Aramaic הַלָּא (hallāʾ, “farther, further, beyond”), Classical Syriac ܠܗܰܠ (ləhal), ܘܰܠܗܰܠ (waləhal, “farther, further, beyond”), Arabic هَلَا (halā, “forward! on!”).
