Cognate with Arabic بَصَل (baṣal) and related to Aramaic בּוּצְלָא. Possibly derived from a variation of the verb פיצל / פִּצֵּל (pitsél, “to peel”); see Aramaic where both בְּצַל and פְּצַל are extant.
