Etymology

Of disputed origin:

  • Per Radlov, a native Turkic word, formed from interjection ә (ä)
  • Räsänen compares it with Classical Mongolian [script needed] (ele, yes, of course)
  • Akhmetyanov derives it from Arabic أَلَا (ʔalā, is it not), أَلَّا (ʔallā, in order not to)[1]

Cognate with Bashkir әллә (əllə), Kyrgyz алда (alda), Uzbek alla-, etc.
