From Proto-Turkic *yü- (“load; to load, carry”). Cognate with Kyrgyz жүк (jük, “load, cargo, burden”), Kazakh жүк (jük), Bashkir йөк (yök), Kumyk юк (yuk), Uzbek yuk, Turkish yük, Chuvash ҫӑк (śăk), etc.
