From a Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *čātïr. Cognate with Bulgarian ша́тра (šátra), Russian шатёр (šatjór), Albanian çadër, Hungarian sátor, Central Kurdish چادر (çadir), Persian چادر, Serbo-Croatian šator, Urdu چادر (ćādar).
