     XV. The Chukchi, who inhabit the most remote northeastern corner of Asia, between the Kolyma and the Anadyr, have only in fairly recent years begun to pay tribute. One part of this rough people roams with many-thousand-headed herds of reindeer across marshy and moss-covered steppes; the other part, poorer than the first, sustains itself by hunting animals and fishing. All of them meet many of their needs through the hunting of whales, walruses, and various kinds of seals.
