Etymology
- Per Vasmer uncertain.
- Per Chernykh from Russian су- (su-) + the root from бурли́ть (burlítʹ), i.e. *субур with intrusive м. Compare сумя́тица (sumjática), су́толока (sútoloka).
The word has been known since the mid-18th and was noted by Lomonosov in the materials for his work "Russian Grammar".
