Inherited from Proto-Ketic *sogʌm (“arrow with a blunt tip”), derived from Proto-Yeniseian *sʌgʌ (“heavy”) + Proto-Yeniseian *qam (“arrow”).[1][2]

Alternatively, analyzable as a compound of съъ (sə́ə̀, “heavy”) +‎ ӄам (qām, “arrow”).
