Etymology

From Persian (rahmat, “mercy”), from Arabic رَحْمَة (raḥma, “compassion, mercy”). Apparently, a Central Asian innovative use in the sense of "thank you".

Compare to Tatar рәхмәт (räxmät), Kazakh рахмет (raxmet)/рақмет (raqmet), Kyrgyz ыракмат (ırakmat), Uzbek rahmat, Uyghur رەھمەت (rehmet, “thank you”), Tajik раҳмат (rahmat, “thank you”).
