ролкер

Russian

Etymology

Attested 1973. Coined from a clipping of English roll-on roll-off, with the ending influenced by nautical terms such as ба́лкер (bálker) and та́нкер (tánker); displaced earlier terms ро-ро (ro-ro) (which was perceived as awkward by Russian speakers) and ро́ллер (róller) (which could be confused with моторо́ллер (motoróller)).
