Alternative forms

Etymology

Inherited from Old Slovak poletovať. Largely displaced by Pannonian Rusyn полєцовац (poljecovac). By surface analysis, полєт (poljet) +‎ -овац (-ovac).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [pɔʎɛˈtɔvat͡s]
  • Rhymes: -ɔvat͡s
  • Hyphenation: по‧лє‧то‧вац

Verb

полєтовац (poljetovacimpf (perfective полєциц)

  1. (intransitive) to take off (of an aircraft)
  2. (intransitive) to start flying, to soar up

Usage notes

  • This is the native Old Slovak-inherited form, and is the form listed in dictionaries; but in reality, it is almost completely unused in any modern writings, replaced by полєцовац (poljecovac).
