пендель

Russian

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈpʲenʲdʲɪlʲ]

Etymology 1

Attested 1930s, originally in the soccer slang sense. Probably derives from the first element in compound engineering terms (e.g. пе́ндель-дина́мо (péndelʹ-dinámo) or пе́ндель-генера́тор (péndelʹ-generátor)) deriving from German Pendel (pendulum), and chosen due to phonetic similarity to the obsolete 1930s pronunciation of пе́нальти (pénalʹti, penalty kick) (in modern Russian, the stress pattern has changed to пена́льти (penálʹti)).
