Etymology
Inherited from Old Slovak ostrovan or an eastern form *ostrovjan, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *ostrověninъ. By surface analysis, острово (ostrovo) + -ян (-jan). Compare Czech ostrovan, Macedonian островјанин (ostrovjanin), Serbo-Croatian острвљанин / ostrovljanin, Slovak ostrovan, Ukrainian острів'я́нин (ostrivʺjányn).
