     «Ой, поми́луй Бог, — говори́т, — како́й ты, Пётр Сердюко́в, молоде́ц!»
     А я отвеча́ю:
     «Я, ва́ше высокоблагоро́дие, не молоде́ц, а большо́й гре́шник, и меня́ ни земля́, ни вода́ принима́ть не хо́чет».

     «Oj, pomíluj Bog, — govorít, — kakój ty, Pjotr Serdjukóv, molodéc!»
     A ja otvečáju:
     «Ja, váše vysokoblagoródije, ne molodéc, a bolʹšój gréšnik, i menjá ni zemljá, ni vodá prinimátʹ ne xóčet».

     So when the colonel started embracing me, and kissing me, and praising me, saying:
     “Oh, merciful God, what a fine fellow you are, Pyotr Serdyukov!”
     I replied:
     “I’m no fine fellow, Your Excellency, but a great sinner, and neither the earth nor the water wants to take me.”

• The term is a grammatical masculine but can refer to both genders. Using it as a feminine may happen in non-standard speech.
