Etymology 2
Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary tentatively presumes the same origin as Etymology 1. Per Duridanov, more likely a reanalysis of Proto-Slavic *mъdьlěti (“to get tardy”).

Mostly used in impersonal constructions, e.g.:
- някому му малее от нещо ― njakomu mu malee ot nešto ― s.o. feels fatigue (grows weak) due to some [cause]
