| ᠮᠠᠨᠢ (mani) | маань (maanʹ) |
Etymology
Inherited from postposed Classical Mongolian ᠮᠠᠨᠤ (manu, “our”) and Middle Mongol ᠮᠠᠨᠤ (manu, “our”). Doublet of preposed манай (manaj, “our”).
Compare Khamnigan Mongol -мана (-mana); Buryat postvocalic -мнай (-mnaj), postconsonantal -най (-naj).
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /mæːn/
- Hyphenation: маань
Particle
маань • (maanʹ)
- Marks the first-person plural possession.
- Дорж багштай маань ― Dorž bagštaj maanʹ ― with our teacher Dorj
Usage notes
- As a possessive particle, минь (minʹ) is always placed after case endings and postpositions.
- Structurally unlike in Buryat or Turkic, additional modification of [substantive] маань with determiner манай is invalid. Therefore, a first-person plural possession in Mongolian may only be formed as манай [substantive] or [substantive] маань.
