Mongolian

MongolianCyrillic
ᠮᠠᠨᠢ
(mani)
маань
(maanʹ)

Etymology

Inherited from postposed Classical Mongolian ᠮᠠᠨᠤ (manu, our) and Middle Mongol ᠮᠠᠨᠤ (manu, our). Doublet of preposed манай (manaj, our).

Compare Khamnigan Mongol -мана (-mana); Buryat postvocalic -мнай (-mnaj), postconsonantal -най (-naj).

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /mæːn/
  • Hyphenation: маань

Particle

маань • (maanʹ)

  1. Marks the first-person plural possession.
Дорж багштай мааньDorž bagštaj maanʹwith our teacher Dorj

Usage notes

  • As a possessive particle, минь (minʹ) is always placed after case endings and postpositions.
  • Structurally unlike in Buryat or Turkic, additional modification of [substantive] маань with determiner манай is invalid. Therefore, a first-person plural possession in Mongolian may only be formed as манай [substantive] or [substantive] маань.
