    Etymology 2

      Inherited from Proto-Slavic *lazъ (plowed land), of uncertain origin. Possibly:

      • Identical to Etymology 1, derived via semantic shift “inlet (into a forest)” → “glade”;
      • From the root of Russian лозг (lozg, crack), ложжи́ть (ložžítʹ, to delve);
      • Akin to Latvian lēzs (even, flat), lēzа (coastal lowland, lagoon).

      Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary tentatively supports the first hypothesis.
