Ket

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Ketic *kuˀt (belt).[1]

Despite phonetic and semantic similarities, Kott and Assan words for 'rope' (Proto-Kottic *kura (rope)) are not related to Ket and Yug words for 'belt', the former of which comes most likely from an Old Turkic source.[2]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [kuʔt˥˧], [kuʔd̥˥˧]

Noun

куʼт (kuˀdn (plural куреӈ)

  1. belt, strap

Usage notes

  • Central Ket varieties also feature a second meaning besides 'belt, strap', 'arrow shaft', the relation of which to the primary sense is unknown.
