Ket

Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Ketic *kajis (“burbot”), derived from Proto-Ketic *kaj + Proto-Yeniseian *ise (“meat, flesh; fish”), later simplifying into *kēˑs.[1] This supposed compound word can be supported by the doublet Ket кайгит (kájkit, “immature burbot (fish)”).

Alternatively analyzable as a petrified compound of ись (īsʲ, “fish; meat”) with an extinct first formant *кай- found in doublet Ket кайгит (kájkit, “immature burbot (fish)”).
