иӈӷусь
Ket
Etymology
Inherited from Proto-Ketic *iŋqus (“house”).[1] Possibly a compound of и (ī, “sun”) + ӄуʼсь (quˀsʲ, “chum; traditional tent”), but this is cast into doubt by Stefan Georg.[2]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [iŋ˩˧.ɢus͉ʲ˧˩], [iŋ˩˧.ŋus͉ʲ˧˩], [i˩˧.ŋːus͉ʲ˧˩], [i˩˧.ʁus͉ʲ˧˩] (See usage notes.)
Noun
иӈӷусь (íŋqusʲ) n (plural эӈӈуӈ)
- house (building)
Usage notes
- Almost all Southern Ket varieties barring the Kellog dialect and almost all Central Ket varieties barring Baklanikha dialect use иӈӈусь, where the uvular stop assimilated in effect by the velar nasal sound in the auslaut of the preceding syllable. This yielded the pronunciations [iŋ˩˧.ŋus͉ʲ˧˩] and also variably [i˩˧.ŋːus͉ʲ˧˩].
- Northern Ket varieties and the Baklanikha dialect use иӷусь, where the uvular stop spirantized instead of being assimilated into a velar nasal sound. The latter phonetic change, where the phonemic /iŋ.qusʲ/ turned into [i˩˧.ʁus͉ʲ˧˩] is possibly, but not certainly motivated by a re-analysis of the etymological component иӈ-, found in genitivus in this compound, analyzed as a plural **иӈ instead (Ket и (ī, “sun”) is not found in the plural number.)
