Etymology

Borrowed from Mandarin 鈔 / 钞 (chāo, “paper money”). This form of the word was originally plural ᠵᠣᠭᠤᠰ (ǰoɣus), but the plural ending -s fossilised by the by time of the modern language, later suppleting the regular plural form ᠵᠣᠭᠤ (ǰoɣu) (which would've become *зоо) as the new plural. This was most likely done to avoid a homophone with зоо (zoo, “back, spine”).
