Inherited from Old Slovak zmáhať, originally the imperfective form of zmôcť. Compare Polish zmagać, Ukrainian змага́тися (zmahátysja).

  4. (reflexive with ше (še), obsolete) to try, to strive, to attempt
    Synonyms: пробовац (probovac), (rare) домагац (domahac)

Usage notes

  • The senses other than "to compete" are nearly completely unused.
