Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Yeniseian *dʲeŋ (“people”).[1] According to Stefan Georg, дэʼӈ reflects a historical re-analysis and reduction of once a regular plural inflection of Ket кеʼт (keˀd, “human being”), *kedeŋ, with second tone (laryngealization) preserved.[2] Most likely not related to the autonym of many Athabascan peoples, for example Dene or Diné.
