Inherited from Proto-Ketic *dʲ-kʷ-diˀ (“S. loads something”, verb configuration),[1] derived from Proto-Yeniseian *dʲ-abij ~ *dij (“load, lay down”, infinitive verb),[2][3] which is itself composed of the following parts: Proto-Yeniseian *dʲ ( thematic consonant) + Proto-Yeniseian *kʷ (thematic consonant) + Proto-Yeniseian *-ij (infinitive verb suffix).
The vocalism change from *-ди to -да (and then phonetic -де) is a secondary development.
The second sense is a semantic development from the primary sense, 'laying down' an object, in this case, offspring.
