Inherited from Proto-Ketic *báλʌn ~ *bánʌλ (bird cherry tree, Prunus padus), perhaps related to Khakas палан (palan, snowball tree, Viburnum opulus) and Southern Altai балан (balan, snowball tree, highbush cranberry, Viburnum opulus).[1]
