абдырау

Kazakh

Etymology

The word is only attested in Kypchak and Karluk languages. Per Sevortyan, it is probably of imitative origin, from "ab-d-ïr-a-", where *ab ~ *ap is the root which can be found in dialectal Turkish apışak (lazy, slow), apşal (fool), abık (fool), abur (stupid), as well as Yakut апчаа (apčaa, to tighten, to be at loss), Kyrgyz аптыгуу (aptıguu, to stumble) and Kazakh аптығу (aptyğu, to stumble)

Cognate with Bashkir аптырау (aptıraw), Kyrgyz абдыроо (abdıroo), Kumyk абдырамакъ (abdıramaq), Karachay-Balkar абызыраргъа (abızırarğa), Crimean Tatar abdıramaq, Uzbek obdiramoq (to be taken aback, be lost).
