From Arabic قَصْر الرُّوم (qaṣr ar-rūm, the Roman castle). An alternative name of Qasr al-Sham, which includes Old Cairo. First attested in the Martyrdom of John of Phanijoit (ⲫⲏⲉ̅ⲑ̅ⲩ̅ ⲓⲱⲁⲛⲛⲏⲥ ⲡⲓⲉⲃⲟⲗϧⲉⲛ ⲫⲁⲛⲓϫⲱⲓⲧ), dating to the early 13th century.
