Etymology

Of uncertain origin, though often taken to be a verbal noun to χάσκω (kháskō, “to yawn”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeh₁y- (“to gape, be wide open”); see there for more. Compare χηλός (khēlós, “coffer”).^[1]
