Etymology

From φωνήεις (phōnḗeis, adjective): as a noun, a substantivisation of its neuter forms, in elliptical use for φωνῆεν [γρᾰ́μμᾰ] (phōnêen [grắmmă], “vocal [letter]”); as an adjective, regularly declined forms.
