Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish تباشیر (tebeşir), from Classical Persian تباشیر (tabāšīr, “chalk, clay, plaster; sugar from bamboo, tabasheer”) (perhaps borrowed from Hindi तबाशीर (tabāśīr, “tabasheer”)), ultimately from Sanskrit तवक्षीर (tavakṣīra, “white substance from bamboo, tabasheer”, literally “bark milk”).

The literal meaning borrowed from Ottoman Turkish "chalk" is used commonly in reference to billiard cue chalk only.
